PENNINE LEAGUE DIVISION 3

Hoyland Vikings 6

Whitehall Warriors 32

The Warriors travelled to the Barnsley outfit looking to complete the double on a rain lashed weekend which saw many matches postponed. Surprisingly their pitch had drained well and was in superb condition and, as the sun came out, Whitehall warmed to the challenge.

The initial opening was quite even with both sets of forwards sparring for supremacy.

The Vikings, however, caught the Warriors napping when their prop was virtually unchallenged at a play the ball to give the home side an early lead. This was the wake up call Whitehall needed and Stuart Syme, their experienced old war horse prop, drove his pack forward and, with youngsters Andy Johnson and Pete Williams following his example, they soon broke down the Vikings blockade. It was Richard Casanove that got the score with one of his many blockbusting runs and with Ricky Middleton’s goal, Whitehall were once again on an even footing.

Hoyland were still putting up plenty of resistance but the Warriors had the bit between their teeth and being prompted well by half backs, Middleton and Captain Baz Stead, Whitehall were soon on the score sheet again.

Guest 2nd rower, Luke Scrimshaw, available due to the Old Brodleians not having a match, was causing havoc every time he had the ball and when he was held up on the line nippy hooker, James Spivey, dived under the defence to extend the Warriors lead.

Hoyland weren’t finished yet and came back strongly. Only the magnificent defence of Green, Walmsley, Johnson and Williams kept them out as they turned them on their backs over the line twice in succession.

The half time whistle came with the Warriors only 10-6 in front so Coach, Richard Darkes, pointed his team in the right direction for his troops to go out for the next 40 minutes and give an awesome display of rugby league.

Middleton and Stead brought their back line more into play and centres Chris Scrimshaw and Alex Scargill destroyed their opponents with their speed and guile.

Luke Scrimshaw intercepted and raced 80 metres and Scargill was on hand to touch down.

Brilliant hands saw the ball go through the half backs and centres for new Kiwi signing, Tane Swap, to touch down in the corner, Middleton converted.

The flowing rugby continued as Williams’ looping pass found fellow forward, Luke Scrimshaw, to give him a much deserved try for his continued hard work.

Another new signing this week was Martin Alvarez and he wasn’t to be left out when his centres got him the ball and he showed a nice turn of speed to race in at the corner.

Man of the Match, Chris Scrimshaw, sent the runner up Man of the Match, Alex Scargill, over for the final try and a convincing victory for the Warriors.

Next week Whitehall travel to Littleborough hoping to complete another double and will be strengthened by another two new signings, Chris Gregg and Alan Bottomley, who are combining ranks in early anticipation of the Brighouse/Whitehall merger.
