Whitehall Warriors (Division 3) 0

Siddal ‘A’ (Division 1) 50

Siddal came to the Warriors with a very strong team due to neither their 1st or 3rd teams having a fixture.

Included in their team were the likes of Richard Pearson, Johnny Lawless, Martin Scrimshaw and Gary Lewis.

Whitehall seemed overawed by these formidable opponents and the early part of this match was dominated by Siddal who, in actual fact, were playing some fantastic rugby.

The Warriors 2nd row partnership of Richard Casanove and Andrew Johnson tried their hardest to stem the fluent Siddal tide and Stuart Syme, the ex Siddal and Halifax prop, made many hard yards all afternoon.

The closest Whitehall came to scoring was when James Spivey sent out a long pass to dad, Richard Spivey, only for him to be bundled into touch by an excellent Siddal cover defence.

By half time the match as a contest was a lost cause but the gallant Warriors put the 32-0 deficit behind them and played with a spirit that was lacking in the 1st half.

Andrew Green and Chris Scrimshaw combined well with Captain Baz Stead and proved menacing whenever in possession. Andrew Sadler, Alex Scargill and Geraint Jones tightened up the back line defence and snuffed out many Siddal raids.

However, ex Whitehall player, Nick Langhorn completed a well deserved hat-trick of tries to complete the Siddal scoring.

The Warriors might have ended this match defeated but can hold their heads high with a creditable performance against opponents from 2 divisions higher.

Referee Les Schofield complimented both teams on a well disciplined display and awarded the Man of the Match necktie to Whitehall’s Richard Casanove for an outstanding personal performance.

On Saturday the Warriors return to league action with a home fixture against Undercliffe Wildboars.
