PENNINE LEAGUE DIVISION 3 Lindley Swifts 22 Whitehall Warriors 6 Whitehall were beaten by a better organised Lindley outfit who controlled the game throughout and used their sloping pitch to it’s best possible advantage. Playing up the hill in the 1st half, Whitehall had to withstand a continual Swifts battering as they were pinned in their own 20 metres for long periods. Stuart Syme, Richard Casanove and Andy Sadler were putting in some big hits but eventually Lindley broke through to gain a 6 point advantage. Stuck in their own 20 metres, Lindley drove the Warriors back time and again and, after regaining possession, scored twice more to lead 16-0. Whitehall never gave up and Captain Alex Scargill, once again leading by example, drove the ball up field, and linked well with new signing Chris Scrimshaw to put the loose forward over for a much needed Warriors try. With Ollie Dugdale’s conversion Whitehall were back in the game and downhill to play. As expected, the Warriors took their turn to batter the Lindley Line and Stuart Syme, Rhys Brown and Alex Scargill were all kept at bay with some tenacious Lindley tackling. Eventually determined Richard Casanove blasted his way over the line but the celebrations were short lived as referee Mick Wilson adjudged the ball hadn’t been grounded. The Warriors were desperate for a try and rejected several penalty attempts, instead opting to run the ball. Unfortunately they were trying too hard and were forcing the play and too often lost possession and let Lindley off the hook. Lindley, who never took a backwards step, were grateful for Whitehall’s generosity at giving them the ball and just played through their sets of 6 and worked their way up field. Whitehall’s Pete Williams was putting in some good long kicks to send the Swifts back down the hill but unfortunately the chase from his team mates wasn’t good enough and allowed Lindley to come straight back. With 10 minutes remaining Lindley virtually sewed this match up when they registered their 4th try giving them a 22-6 lead, and, although Whitehall bombarded the Swifts line they didn’t have the right key to unlock this outstanding Lindley defence. On Saturday Whitehall are at home to Odsal Sedberg and welcome back Club Captain and creative standoff Baz Stead, who was sorely missed at Lindley.
