PENNINE LEAGUE DIVISION 3

Odsal Sedbergh 24

Whitehall Warriors 16

Whitehall, with several late withdrawals, fielded a weakened team but began this match positively.

The Warriors big forwards, Stuart Syme, Pete Williams and Chris Higson, were putting in some hard runs but their young spirited opponents defended superbly.

Halfbacks, Ricky Middleton and Baz Stead, were being very creative in the windy conditions and it seemed only a matter of time before Whitehall broke down Sedbergh’s stubborn resistance.

This did not materialise however, and it was Odsal on the counter attack that got the try and conversion.

With half time approaching Whitehall didn’t want to concede another try as they had the advantage of the slope in the second half. Despite the gallant defensive efforts of Andrew Johnson and Daniel Raika, Sedbergh, prompted well by Aiden Whiting and Bryan Worsley, got over the whitewash for a 12-0 lead at the turn.

The Warriors began the 2nd half looking for a Sedbergh collapse as they battered their opponents with charging runs from Richard Casanove, Martin Alvarez and Daniel Raika.

Stuart Syme deservedly was the man rewarded with the try and Middleton added the extra 2 points.

Whitehall continued with the onslaught and Williams and Scrimshaw drove the ball hard to the line, Chris Gregg found the rampaging Higson and he offloaded in the tackle to Marcus Gill who scooted in at the corner.

All the Whitehall team wanted to score now, but with the loss of injured skipper and playmaker Baz Stead, all the Warriors had to offer was one up rugby.

Sedbergh stemmed the flow and the Warriors grew frustrated at being held time and again on the Odsal line. Sloppy play crept in with dropped passes and missed tackles and Sedbergh took advantage and worked the ball up-field. On the 6th tackle an Odsal player dropped the ball and Whitehall stood waiting for the ref to give the hand-over but he must have missed this mistake and an Odsal player picked up the loose ball and ran over for the try. The conversion made the score 18-10.

Still bemused by this set back Whitehall looked all at sea. Odsal didn’t waste time waiting for the warriors to regain their composure and their wingman, Jonathan Wood, raced in under the sticks to extend their lead to 24-10.

With the match slipping away Whitehall desperately fought back. Andrew Sadler made good yards and handed on to Richard Casanove who smashed an opening in the Odsal wall to put Man of the Match Chris Gregg over the line. Middleton added the extras but it was too little too late as time ran out for the Warriors.

On Saturday Whitehall are at home to Undercliffe Wildboars and are looking to avenge the defeat suffered at Bradford earlier in the season. Kick off 2.30pm.
