PENNINE LEAGUE DIVISION 3

Whitehall Warriors 18

Bank Top Harriers 10

Whitehall were looking for revenge after narrowly losing at Bank Top earlier in the season, and the Warriors looked awesome in the first 20 minutes when the set piece moves that Coach Richard Darkes had worked on came to fruition.

Hooker, Chris Gregg, playing only his 2nd match for Whitehall, was the master tactician Darkes had been missing on the pitch and he inspired his team mates to topple the league leaders.

Halfbacks Ricky Middleton and Captain Baz Stead, sent loose forward Al Bottomley charging for the line, but the Bank Top’s defence held firm, as they also did with 2 long range efforts from full back Andrew Green.

As always Stuart Syme was putting in the hard yards and Richard Casanove the big hits.

Bank Top’s danger man, burly centre Jason Gelder, was being watched closely by Alex Scargill and the tireless defensive efforts of Andrew Johnson and Pete Williams were halting any forward attacks.

Frustration at not having things their own way was setting in for Bank Top and they paid for their indiscretions when Ricky Middleton slotted over 2 penalties for the only scores of the 1st half.

Whitehall were soon on the attack with Andy Sadler and James Spivey leading the way but it was that man Chris Gregg that got the score cleverly using his forwards as a foil. Ricky Middleton made no mistake with the goal kick.

Baz Stead’s "down town" kick was chased by speedy wingman Martin Alvarez and Bank Top fullback, Paul Artist, was lucky not to be sent off when he foolishly tripped up the Whitehall player. Middleton’s penalty kick made the score 12-0.

Bank Top rallied and had their best spell when they decided to play rugby instead of mixing it up.

Their huge prop James Barraclough was superb in off loading in the tackle and Carl Britain found fullback Paul Artist out wide for him to make amends and score in the corner.

Whitehall’s centres, Chris Scrimshaw and Pep Scargill, made good in-roads into their opponent’s territory and, when Bank Top tried to take playmaker Chris Gregg’s head off, Middleton once again punished them with 2 more Whitehall points.

The league leaders were not ready to concede and centre Jason Gelder finally managed to slip his markers and score by the posts. With the conversion the score was 14-10 and about 10 minutes to go.

Bank Top had the Warriors pinned on their own line looking for that elusive winning try but Whitehall’s Man of the Match, Chris Gregg, sprinted out to snuff out the danger.

Alan Bottomley and Richard Casanove drove the ball hard at the desperate Bank Top line and an ace "bullit" pass from Baz Stead sent Chris Scrimshaw haring in at the corner to clinch the match.

On Saturday the jubilant Whitehall side face Slaithwaite Saracens who have only lost one match all season.

This match will be played at the Brighouse Rangers ground in early preparation of the forthcoming merger between the two clubs next season. Kick off 2.30pm.
