PENNINE LEAGUE DIVISION 3

Whitehall Warriors 6

Lindley Swifts 16

Lindley had to win this match to keep their promotion hopes alive and started strongly with their two props Dave Valentine and Mark Burns putting in some hard punching runs.

Whitehall’s Craig Riley and Mike Hogg led by example and encouraged their team mates with some bone crunching tackles to repel their opponents.

Unfortunately the Warriors then suffered a major blow when they lost their in-form prop, Pete Williams, with a broken cheekbone.

Whitehall weren’t deterred however and Andrew Johnson, James Spivey and Andy Sadler doubled their efforts to keep Lindley at bay.

On 30 minutes Lindley finally cracked the stubborn Warriors’ defence when they threw the ball out wide for their wingman, Frank Adams, to score in the corner.

Another try, to brother Martin Adams, in the other corner followed and saw Lindley go in at half-time 8-0 up.

Whitehall’s coach, Richard Darkes, wasn’t despondent and sent his troops out for the 2nd half in determined fashion.

Captain Baz Stead worked well with fellow half-back, Lee Walmsley, to send Alex Scargill on a 80 metre run but Lindley scrambled back to snuff out the danger.

Lindley counter attacked and despite the efforts of Gaz Simpson and Marcus Gill the Swifts managed to cross the whitewash for a converted try.

Whitehall’s Richard Casanove and Craig Riley worked a set piece move but were held out, as were Baz Stead and Daniel Raika.

The Swifts relieved the pressure and took a penalty in front of the Whitehall sticks to extend the lead to 16-0.

Whitehall’s Man of the Match Andy Johnson and Mike Hogg took their team to the Swifts line and Baz Stead finally unlocked the Swifts defence to send Richard Casanove in under the sticks. Lee Walmsley added the extra 2 points.

Veteran Ref Duggie Booth, who had continued despite pulling a calf muscle in the first 20 minutes, blew up for full time and ended Whitehall’s mixed season which will see them finish mid-table in Division 3.
